Folk-jazz
Awen Ensemble are a 7 piece alternative folk-jazz outfit. Meaning ‘poetic inspiration’ in Welsh, the name Awen outlines the band’s intention to explore folkloric heritage, landscape and emotional processes through their music, inspiring audiences to connect and reflect on these elements. Playing both vocal led and instrumental works, Awen Ensemble take inspiration from modal and spiritual jazz traditions as well as British and Irish folk music, creating compositions that are expansive and expressive. Featuring thoughtful musicianship, shimmering instrumentation and a Celtic mystique, Awen Ensemble bring a unique offering to the table.
In November 2025, the jazz/folk-alternative band Awen Ensemble will release their version of the old folk song 'Hiraeth'. All to go with their new single, the band will hold a tour of workshops for local musicians and performances in Blaenau Ffestiniog, Bala and Y Bermo.
The workshop will give musicians and people from the community the opportunity to learn Welsh folk songs under the coordinator Emyr Penry Dance, and to experiment with these songs within the jazz idiom with members of Awen Ensemble. The workshop will run 3pm - 4.30pm and is free of charge. Please sign up so we know how many people to expect.

Cydweithfa jazz-gwerin amgen ydy Awen Ensemble. Mae’r enw Awen, sy’n golygu ‘ysbrydoliaeth farddonol’ yn amlinellu bwriad y band i archwilio treftadaeth lên gwerin, tirwedd a phrosesau emosiynol trwy eu cerddoriaeth, ac i ysbrydoli cynulleidfaoedd i gysylltu efo ac adlewyrchu ar yr elfennau yma. Gan chwarae gweithiau dan arweiniad lleisiol ac offerynnol, mae’r band yn cael ei ddylanwadu gan draddodiadau jazz moddol ac ysbrydol a hefyd cherddoriaeth werin o Brydain ac Iwerddon i greu cyfansoddiadau sy'n eang a mynegiannol. Yn cynnwys cerddoroldeb meddylgar, offeryniaeth symudliw a dirgelwch Celtaidd, daw Awen Ensemble ag arlwy unigryw i berfformiadau byw.
Yn fis Tachwedd 2025, bydd y band jazz/gwerin-amgen Awen Ensemble yn rhyddhâi ei fersiwn o’r hen gan werin ‘Hiraeth’. I gyd mynd efo’i sengl newydd, bydd y band yn cynnal taith o weithdai i gerddorion lleol a pherfformiadau yn Blaenau Ffestiniog, Bala ac Y Bermo.
Bydd y gweithdai yn rhoi cyfle i gerddorion a phobol o’r gymuned cael dysgu caneuon gwerin Cymraeg o dan gydlynydd Emyr Penry Dance, ac i arbrofi efo’r caneuon yma o fewn yr idiom jazz efo aelodau o Awen Ensemble.
